FARMING FOR SOIL HEALTH

Building resilient agricultural systems from the ground up – outreach event

In association with the 3rd Global Soil Biodiversity Conference an outreach event will be held at the research farm of Teagasc Johnstown Castle, in County Wexford on the 16th of March 2023. This field event, entitled ‘Farming for soil health: Building resilient agricultural systems from the ground up’, will demonstrate the practices and technologies that can be adopted on farms to assess and enhance soil health. These will include demonstrations of visual assessment techniques, soil functional assessment, practices that improve soil health in soils (including diversification of grassland swards, cover crops, straw incorporation and manure amendment of soils), avoiding physical damage of soil, enhancing soil nutrient supply and increasing soil carbon.
Those in attendance will also have the opportunity to take a close look at some of the biology in soil and ‘Ask a Soil Scientist’. Attendees will include farmers, agricultural advisors and policy makers, and the scientific community including GSBI scientists. This event is free to attend, but registration is essential.

Wexford is 135km to the south of Dublin, close to the Rosslare ferryport. Regular public transport is available from UCD to Wexford town with Wexford bus. If there is sufficient interest there may be the option to arrange a specific public transport option from UCD to the event. Johnstown Castle is also home to the Johnstown Castle estate and gardens, and the Irish agricultural museum johnstowncastle.ie
